ARTIST STATEMENT
My paintings do not fit neatly into a specific category and they are created using several different methods. Some are representational, some are loosely based on real subjects and some are altered memories. Some are sketched or started on site and some are taken from studies or from memory while in the studio. All are intentionally unrefined, multi-layered, painterly and original.

Most work ends up with some sort of visible grid or modular divisions. I'm continually intrigued by the juxtaposition of horizontal and vertical delineation with the organic curves and tangles of nature. I also take pleasure in the truthfulness of revealing the compositional process in a completed piece.

The palette is reflective of both my subjects and my personality; quiet, controlled, subtle yet complex, sometimes light and sometimes dark with nearly hidden highlights.

Materials include graphite/pencil, charcoal, crayon, watercolor and acrylic paint and ink. They are applied with brushes, palette knives, sticks, sponges, cloth and occasionally screen printing. Mixed media pieces usually incorporate drawings, serigraphs and laser prints on paper which are layered onto canvas or heavier paper. Steel wire is a recent addition to the list.

Subject matter that holds my interest is ever changing, though I am always drawn back to the landscape (living in the High Sierra will do that) or objects from nature. Whether working in the studio or outdoors, being surrounded by the colors, scents and sounds of the mountain environment always surfaces in the work.
